New Dental Implant Program

Date
Body

The University of Manitoba is coordinating a new dental implant program that will provide treatment for edentulous First Nations patients in Western Canada.

Manitoba alumnus Dr. Gerald Niznick (DMD 1966) committed $500 000 toward the development of the First Nations Implant-Retained Overdenture Program, based at his alma mater. The program’s goal is to explore the potential and efficacy of implant overdentures as a standardized, cost-effective procedure for edentulous patients, while also providing dental students with education and training experience.

The 3 Canadian dental schools involved (the University of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta) will each recruit an Implant Fellow to assist with the teaching, research and service components of the program. Each university centre will provide treatment for up to 30 patients per year.
