Dalhousie University’s faculty of dentistry will be celebrating its centennial from May 23 to 26, 2012, with a series of special events. Under the banner “Celebrate Our Past, Embrace The Future,” the festivities will include a special 100th Convocation Ceremony, a Celebration Dinner, a Meet and Greet event, tours of the dentistry building, a golf tournament as well as many opportunities for class reunions and other family-focused events. There will also be a wide selection of continuing education and personal development courses on offer, with many courses being led by current and former Dalhousie faculty members.

On June 2, 1891, organized dentistry in Nova Scotia was born when the Nova Scotia Dental Association (NSDA) held its inaugural meeting. Over the next near-decade, the NSDA worked to establish the Maritime Dental College, which formally opened its doors in 1908. It would eventually become the faculty of dentistry at Dalhousie University—the first university faculty of dentistry in Canada.

Four years later, the first 4 students graduated from the faculty of dentistry, forming the Class of 1912. These graduating dentists set a course that has since been followed by more than 3400 graduates from the faculty of dentistry and the school of dental hygiene.

Be part of Dalhousie’s special centennial events held in recognition of this first graduating class and all the students, faculty, staff and friends who have come along since that time. Come to Halifax and join in the celebration of Dalhousie’s past, while embracing the future of dentistry.
