Dr. Louis Bernier
On March 24, 2013, CDA past president Dr. Louis Bernier passed away at the age of 92. Dr. Bernier earned his dental degree from the University of Montreal in 1946 and his diploma in orthodontics the following year. He maintained a private practice in Quebec City for many years, in addition to being a consultant in orthodontics to the Hôtel-Dieu hospital.
Dr. Bernier served as CDA president in 1971-72 and was actively involved in organized dentistry throughout his career. He served in various capacities for the Canadian Dental Association, International College of Dentists, College of Dental Surgeons of the Province of Quebec, Quebec Orthodontists Association and Quebec Dental Society.
Dr. Bernier contributed to the development of the Laval University faculty of dentistry, where he established the Émile-Beaulieu Funds, to support teaching and research activities. The university also named an award in his honour—the Louis-Bernier award—which is presented every year to an undergraduate student showing a keen interest in dental research.
Dr. Bernier is survived by his 4 children, Marie-Suzanne, Michèle, François and Jean.
