Dr. Jack Cottrell of Port Perry, Ontario, was elected to the FDI World Dental Federation Council during the 2010 FDI Annual World Dental Congress held in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, in September.
The FDI Council is responsible for conducting all FDI business, including policy development, program planning and budget management. Dr. Cottrell’s election to Council will further enhance Canadian dentistry’s ability to put forth Canada’s perspective on professional issues at the global level.
“I feel extremely privileged to have been selected to represent our profession on the international scene,” said Dr. Cottrell. “I am committed to doing everything that I can to uphold the FDI mission and values and to serve all of our member countries.”
Dr. Cottrell’s 3-year term on FDI Council follows on his previous roles with the international organization, where he served as chair of the North American Regional Organization and as a delegate to the General Assembly for the past 8 years.
“The challenges facing oral health and the dental profession are unquestionably global in nature and global solutions must be found,” adds Dr. Cottrell. “The complex access to care issue facing populations around the world underscores the importance of FDI’s mission of ‘leading the world to optimal oral health.’ This will be an area of high interest for me and I am hoping that my experience in volunteer work in developing countries will be of great assistance.”
Dr. Cottrell is a past-president of CDA and the Ontario Dental Association. He is also a member of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
